Sparking Zero so misunderstood the design of the previous entry that it's actually better to play at 40 fps than it is 60 because the gaps from frame to frame help pace your reflexes.
The old games matched the visuals and the timing of the animations to signal what combos were possible.
Zero imitated those old animations, but didn't concern themselves with the timing so if you want to strategize you have to burn each individual character into your muscle memory to a ridiculous degree bc they all have different timings that aren't properly signified visually.
Some of the unique specialist moves are copied from the older game, but clearly misunderstood, vanishing dashes, for example, consume a ton of energy, make you difficult to hit, and make you move quickly. The point is you trade you offensive power for a few seconds of near invincibility and speed. If you know how to time it, it's great to strategize around.
The reboot includes those vanishing dashes, but without the speed or flexibility, so it's reduced to a flashy useless move. The animations for follow-ups to it are there, but bc the timing is screwed up, it can't actually connect.
It's so damn sloppy under the hood.
