Text No.102 OSU – The Discipline That Remains
There comes a point on the Kyokushin path where words lose their meaning.
Explanations fall short.
Motivation disappears.

What remains is Osu.
Osu is not a greeting.
It is not tradition for tradition’s sake.
It is a pedagogical tool for personal development, forged through discipline and repetition and show Respect.

In Japanese, Osu is written with two kanji:
押忍 (Osu)
• 押 (Oshi) – to push, to press forward
• 忍 (Shinobu) – to endure, to persevere, to tolerate pain

Together, they mean:
To push through endurance.
To continue despite pain, pressure, and discomfort.
This is the essence of Osu no Seishin.

Osu teaches us to give our best when conditions are not ideal.
When the body hurts.
When the mind resists.
When quitting would be easier.
In Kyokushin, we do not stop because something is uncomfortable.
We stop only when the task is completed.
Osu is not aggression.
It is self-control under pressure.
When we say Osu, we accept responsibility without complaint.
We acknowledge difficulty without negotiation.
We commit to effort without needing encouragement and show respect.
This is why Osu is education.
Not academic education—but character education.
It trains patience when progress is slow.
Humility when pride wants recognition.
Respect for effort—our own and that of others.
In training, Osu is felt in the legs that keep moving.
In the breath that stays steady.
In the silence when excuses are swallowed.
In fighting, Osu appears when strength fades and only will remains.
When there is no room for drama.
Only continuation.
This is why Osu does not end at the dojo door.
It follows us into life.
Into work.
Into relationships.
Into responsibility.
Osu teaches us to stand firm when things become difficult.
To remain present when pressure increases.
To move forward without bitterness.
Sosai understood this.
That is why he built Kyokushin on Osu, not comfort.
Not reward.
Not praise.
Just truth.
Osu is the moment where choice disappears.
Only action remains.
Osu helps us persevere when giving up would be easier.
It teaches us to transform the opponent’s strength into learning, respect, and self-mastery,
and to go beyond our limits in the ongoing battle with ourselves.
And that is why Osu is not something we say.
It is something we live.
Osu in the spirit of Kyokushin
