🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE image image On this day in 1971, David Bowie released the LP “Hunky Dory” (December 17) Compared to the guitar-driven hard rock sound of “The Man Who Sold the World”, Bowie opted for a warmer, more melodic piano-based pop rock and art pop style on Hunky Dory. Upon its release, “Hunky Dory” and its lead single "Changes" received little promotion from RCA, who were wary that Bowie was about to transform his image again shortly. Thus, despite very positive reviews from the British and American music press, the album initially sold poorly and failed to chart. It was only after the commercial breakthrough of Bowie's 1972 follow-up album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” that “Hunky Dory” itself became a commercial success, peaking at #3 on the UK Albums Chart, and remaining on the chart for 69 weeks. It also made the charts in Australia, where it peaked at #39. Retrospectively, “Hunky Dory” has been critically acclaimed as one of Bowie's best works, and features on several lists of the greatest albums of all time. Within the context of his career, it is considered to be the album where "Bowie starts to become Bowie", definitively discovering his voice and style. “Changes” and “Life on Mars” are highlights. #davidbowie, #bowie, #hunkydory, #changes, #mickronson, #rickwakeman, #lifeonmars, #classicalbum, #70sMusic, #70srock, #classicrock, #dailyrockhistory, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️
🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE image image On this day in 1976, the Steve Miller Band single “Fly Like An Eagle” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #73 (December 18) The song from the “Fly Like An Eagle” LP eventually peaked at #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and also in Canada, and #21 in the Netherlands. An earlier 1973 version features a more bluesy and less funk-inspired rhythm, with the guitar taking the synthesizer parts (with similar delay effects), and slightly different lyrics to this re-recorded 1976 version from the album of the same name. Steve Miller bought the synthesizer used for "Space Intro" which precedes “”Fly Like An Eagle” for just #190 at a local music retailer; allegedly “the trashiest synthesizer in the store!” This is a very cool, classic 70s track… #stevemiller, #stevemillerband, #flylikeaneagle, #spaceintro, #classicrock, #70smusic, #70srock, #thisdayinrock, #rockhistory, #dailyrockhistory, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

It also stayed on the US Billboard Hot 100 for 36 weeks, then a record for a female artist, peaking at #2. The song also reached #1 in Canada, #4 in Ireland, #6 in New Zealand and the UK, and #9 in South Africa. Branigan's cover of "Gloria" (a 1979 love song written and composed in Italian by Umberto Tozzi and Giancarlo Bigazzi) appeared in the smash hit Grammy and Academy Award-winning musical drama “Flashdance” in 1983, though it was not included in the film's soundtrack. In 2003, Branigan agreed "Gloria" was her "signature song", adding: “I always get the same reaction wherever I go, and whenever I perform it ... I have to end every show with that song, and people just go crazy." "Gloria" earned Laura Branigan a nomination for the Best Pop Vocal Performance Female Grammy Award for 1982. #gloria, #laurabranigan, #umbertotozzi, #80smusic, #dailyrockhistory, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday "Pure signal,no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image October 8, 1906 — Leo Tolstoy refuses the Nobel Prize in Literature. At the age of 78, the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy declined consideration for the Nobel Prize in Literature, firmly convinced of the moral harm of money. When the Russian Academy of Sciences nominated him, Tolstoy wrote to his Finnish friend and translator Arvid Järnefelt, asking him to intercede with the Swedish Academy to award the prize to someone else. Järnefelt — surprised but loyal — fulfilled the unusual request. As a result, the 1907 prize went to the relatively unknown Italian poet Giosuè Carducci. Tolstoy later said that his refusal spared him the heavy burden of deciding what to do with such a large sum of money. He believed that “in money itself, in the very possession of it, there is something immoral." "Pure signal, no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️
🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image The Castle of Guimarães 🏰 The Castle of Guimarães, located in northern Portugal, is one of the country’s most important and symbolic medieval monuments. Built in the 10th century and later expanded in the 12th century, the castle played a crucial role in the early formation of the Portuguese nation. It is closely associated with Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, who is believed to have been born nearby and used the fortress as a key military base during the struggle for independence from León. With its solid granite walls, imposing keep, and defensive towers, the castle reflects the austere Romanesque military architecture of the period. Its strategic position allowed control over the surrounding territory, reinforcing its role as a center of power in medieval Portugal. Today, the Castle of Guimarães stands as a powerful national symbol and a major cultural landmark. Carefully restored in the 20th century, it offers visitors the chance to walk along its battlements, explore the central keep, and enjoy views over the historic city below. The castle forms part of the UNESCO-listed historic center of Guimarães, often referred to as the “Cradle of Portugal.” Its quiet courtyards and massive stone structures evoke the atmosphere of the nation’s earliest days. Whether visited for its historical significance or its striking simplicity, the Castle of Guimarães remains a proud reminder of Portugal’s origins and enduring identity. 📸 @konstantin_zhdanov ✍️ Caption written by @iconicpalace "Pure signal, no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️
