Hey people who have ever moved their Mastodon accounts to a different server, I need to ask you something: When you moved, did you get a flood of email notifications about your followers transferring to the new Mastodon server? If you did get a flood of emails, how recently did you move your account? EDIT: Also it would help to know if you had email notifications about new followers switched on or off (more info at ) #AskFedi
Corporate social networks are trying to kill the hashtag because they want users to only discover things through corporate algorithms ๐Ÿ˜ฉ Mastodon and the wider Fediverse love the hashtag as it allows humans to retain control of their feeds ๐Ÿฅฐ You can use hashtags to label a post with its main topics. More info about adding hashtags at You can follow hashtags to see posts labelled with those tags in your feed. More info at #FediTips #Hashtags
Did you know Mastodon has a post scheduling system? You can write a post now and set it to publish in the future: โžก๏ธ Weirdly, the scheduler is built into the Mastodon server software but the developers never got round to making an official interface for it. That's why it isn't in the web interface or official apps. However, Mastodon is an open platform and third party apps are able to provide the interface so that this feature can be used ๐Ÿฅณ #FediTips #Mastodon
As I posted recently, the continued growth of mastodon.social is putting the #Fediverse in danger (here's why: ). The quickest, easiest and most effective way to solve this would be if the official apps stopped promoting mastodon.social, and instead promoted a rotating selection from a pool of reliable servers with solid track records. If you're comfortable using Github, please give thumbs up to both these issues: - -
Would you like to make your PeerTube accounts and videos more visible? Do you want to reach more viewers and more followers? I've done a guide to promoting your PeerTube accounts, channels and videos at: โžก๏ธ I've tried to list everything I could think of, let me know if I've missed anything! ๐Ÿ™‚ #FediTips #PeerTube #Fediverse
In case you missed it buried in the replies, I've done a guide to using Mastodon's new quoting feature: โžก๏ธ The guide covers how to quote, how to consent to being quoted, how to go back to single-click boosts etc and answers lots more quoting-related questions. #FediTips #Mastodon
Another nice feature on the Mastodon 4.5.0 update: more emoji! If you click the picker in the web interface you should see a lot more emoji to choose from. There is now for example ๐Ÿฆฃ which is a lot closer to a mastodon than ๐Ÿ˜ #FediTips #Mastodon
Okay, bonus post today! Mastodon v4.5.0 has just been released! ๐Ÿฅณ This brings many improvements, most significantly: - Fetch all replies, threads are now the same for everyone no matter which server they are on. If new replies are detected in the thread you're viewing, a box will appear that lets you load them automatically. - Quote toots, click ๐Ÿ” boost on a post and select "Quote" to use this. If the option isn't there, it means the person posting hasn't given permission to be quoted. image
There are two ways that servers on here can accept new members: -Sign-ups where you join instantly -Sign-ups where the server moderator has to manually approve your membership Approval sign-ups make moderation much more effective, but some people seem to find them more difficult. If you are someone who finds approval sign-ups more difficult, could you explain the main thing putting you off? (By the way, this isn't meant to be judgmental, just want to find out what the main barriers are! ๐Ÿ™‚ )
A number of people have asked what happens to your posts if you move your account to another Mastodon server. If you follow all the steps in the transfer guide at your old posts will stay visible on the old server, they will let people know you've moved and they will redirect people to your new account. As far as I know this is the only account transfer guide that includes steps to make sure that your old posts redirect people. Other guides seem to skip this. #FediTips
