Why doesn't the US government just borrow $38.5 trillion from the Fed and pay off its debt?
Because if the money is issued too quickly, the entire system would fall apart overnight
Everyone who gets paid back can spend their money and add the newly issued dollars to the economy
Prices would 10X overnight
Instead, the goal is to have it fall apart over time, so the people at the top can extract as much wealth and time as possible from the people at the bottom
If the Ponzi collapses too quickly, everyone will want to exit
If it takes time, the majority of participants won't realize they're being stolen from
