some feelings a name could evoke 1. future of the internet 2. a natural thing that always existed 3. a niche nerd thing 4. another company i personally see 2 > 1 > 3 > 4 it’s gonna be weird anyway so being distinct and googleable is important. both distinct and (2) is tricky
why i picked internet handle: - it obviously sounds universal - it directly explains its function (a handle) - it’s a contradiction: a “handle” always belongs to an app but here it’s an “internet handle” like an “internet site”. so you NOTICE it’s weird - now you know what weird thing to google
i think it’s impossible to explain it by name alone so this is why an anchoring website is required. it’ll be less important over time as the concept gets entrenched it needs to obviously sound NOT like another company it needs to feel natural to the web, same degree of naturalness as email
my wish list really is - no “proto”, i just think it’s super ugly, personal preference - links to a shared normie explanation so the concept is anchored - conveys being universal rather than another service i’m not married to “internet handle”, just wanted to play with what that could look like
so far bluesky has not really been "answering to corporate interests", where do you get that from. like if you actually look at company history, what they've been working on, what they're working on now, it's objectively not what's happening. but somehow they found the most annoying userbase
the story here is that bluesky goes out of its way to implement a common feature in a privacy preserving way and double opt-in, but they fail to summarize it, while their audience which is always loudly screaming in comments again fails to actually read the link. self-inflicted but still annoying
maybe it's a subversive strategy to keep the most annoying people to leave but unfortunately they don't leave anyway so you might as well post good
guys you literally already wrote a whole blog post about it, how hard is it to add "opt-in on both sides" into the tweet before posting (and to add alt text). you know your userbase and somehow keep fumbling basic communication View quoted note →
