Did you know that The Tablelands are made primarily of peridotite, a rock that comes from the upper mantle of the Earth, far below the surface. This kind of rock is almost never found at the Earth’s surface.
Around 470 million years ago,(the formation of the Appalachian Mountains), an ancient oceanic plate was thrust over the edge of a continental plate. It pushed the mantle rock—peridotite—up to the surface, where the Tablelands are today.
Peridotite is rich in iron and magnesium but lacks the nutrients needed for plant life, and is even toxic to many plants
This is a unique hike that reminds you how tiny you are in the universe — and how Earth, a cozy home, was born of violent events triggered by a ruthless nature that somehow shaped a gentle place for us to live. Yet we, too, can be violent… but we always have the choice to be otherwise.
