I often get the feeling, that people complaining about "bloat", like "all those abstraction layers" don't know how terrible things were. I've been already active in programming when "let's port to JAVA" was a way to modernize old code bases (that were e.g. COBOL based). And everybody would have loved to have what many consider "bloat" today, because everything was pain.
