A Black person said he experienced some specific anti-Black racism and SF people are asking him to say exactly what racist thing was said to him so they can judge whether that was really racist That’s racist, you all.
I think my former employer’s plan for dealing with employment attorneys is to ‘simply not pick up the phone or respond to any lawyers’
As part of my research for MSG Chinese (a newsletter about Chinese food that I am launching this Xmas) I am reading a lot of historical Chinese food books. One written by a former Chinese ambassador to London in the 1940s. Tumultuous times! #ChineseFood #Food
For my new project about making Chinese food more accessible, I would like to write a guide to Chinese bakeries. Other than where to go and what to order, what are you curious about? What feels most scary (language is one, I’m sure; dietary prefs and allergy info)? Not knowing what to expect, etc? @npub13sqp...epy8 #Food #ChineseFood
Most fine dining SF restaurants try to do some Asian fusion these days and they often do it poorly (largely because they don’t do the Asian part well). This comment made me laugh coz it’s been my experience with most of them. “The fried rice tastes like the healthy fried rice my mom makes me eat at home. To be clear, I wouldn’t eat these dishes if someone gave it to me for free.” (This is a review of a SF restaurant I especially dislike) image
Comments on almost all major recipe sites: ‘Recipe for X’ ‘I didn’t have X, so I substituted with Y, and this recipe sucks’ (There’s a great subreddit /r/ididnthaveeggs that’s for this sort of thing specifically)
When I was growing up in Singapore, one of my closest friends was a girl from Surabaya, Indonesia. Her family sent her to Singapore because it was the decade where Chinese Indonesians were being.. well, killed, back in their home cities. We went everywhere together. She taught me everything I know about food in Indonesia. We would go to Lucky Plaza, the mall where almost all the eateries catered to Indonesians. She taught me the difference between the local Malay dishes and whatever I later loved a lot in East Java. When I last saw her in Surabaya 2 years ago, I noticed that she never ate with her mom, which was unusual to me. (My mom and I go on food trips around Asia together) I learned that like many ‘society people’, aunty attributed liking food with disliking her appearance. My friend took the opposite path, initially out of rebellion. Before I got there, she said ‘gimme a list of what you want to eat!’ So I gave her.. 20 things. I picked things I knew I could not get easily outside Surabaya. Like nasi cumi, empal goreng, bebek Madura.. When I arrived at her house, 15 things were already on the table. I said, well I didn’t mean all at once! She said well that’s too bad, you only have 2 days so you have to do the first 15 now so we can try new things for the rest of your trip. #Food #TootSea #Indonesia
