E. O. Wilson was an American biologist naturalist and writer best known for his work on ants biodiversity and the concept of sociobiology.
Born in 1929 in Alabama he spent most of his career at Harvard University where his research helped establish modern understanding of social insects and the evolutionary basis of social behavior. He was a leading voice in conservation biology warning about the accelerating loss of species and ecosystems and arguing that biodiversity has intrinsic value as well as practical importance for human survival.
Wilson also popularized science through widely read books such as Sociobiology The Diversity of Life and Consilience earning 2 Pulitzer Prizes for nonfiction before his passing in 2021.
