#FreedomFlotilla Coalition Press Release: While en route to #Gaza , the 'Madleen' responded to a mayday relay from a #Frontex drone in the Central Mediterranean. ‘Madleen’ immediately contacted Greek and Egyptian authorities. However, both confirmed they were too far away to respond and advised the 'Madleen' to intervene if possible. After rescuing four people who jumped into the sea to escape the #LibyanCoastGuard , the crew issued their own mayday. The rescued individuals had fled violence in Sudan and must not be returned to Libya, where they face detention and #torture
Rima Hassan, member of European Parliament, aboard the 'Madleen', stated:
"We denounce the European Union’s role in obstructing the movement of asylum seekers, in clear violation of #InternationalLaw - an approach that has led to the deaths of tens of thousands and turned the Mediterranean into a graveyard."
