Akathisia is not just restlessness. The movements dont even begin to express the true depth of the torture it inflicts.
Unless someone has been forced to exist and try to survive severe akathisia, they cannot begin to comprehend it.
It's a living nightmare worse than a horror movie.
Severe fear of being alone (yet many are alone).. feeling like a terrified child alone in the world.
It feels like you're on the verge of combustionthere is so much agitation at unbearable intensity that you could spontaneously erupt into flames at any second.
Extreme terror and panic
As if a relentless, merciless serial killer is hunting you every moment of every day.
You cant rest. You cant breathe fully. Your body and mind are gripped by an overwhelming sense that something unspeakably evil is coming for youno hiding place. Just the suffocating certainty that youre being stalked, even in the silence, even when no one is around.
Youre flooded with a deep dread that something is coming to destroy you, and theres absolutely nothing you can do to escape it.
It also feels like youve been hurled out of a plane at full force with no parachutecompletely helpless, spiraling through the sky. You know the ground is coming, and when it does, it will end you but the ground never comes. Youre trapped in an endless, stomach-dropping free-fall. Every nerve is on fire. Your heart is pounding so violently it feels like it might burst through your chest. Adrenaline floods your entire body in relentless waves. Youre not just afraidyoure in a state of soul-shaking terror. Theres no escape, no control, no reliefjust an unending descent into a nightmare that wont let go.
It can also feel like youre fused to a live electrical wire a relentless, searing current surging through every inch of your body. Your skin crawls, and theres an unbearable internal buzzing, as if youre being electrocuted from the inside out.
All this and more happening while you try to fight so much urgency and impulse to unalive yourself to escape the unrelenting torture.
Akathisia is a torture so unimaginable that its hard to believe its real.
For some the torture is short lived... while others it can last many years at constant severe levels.
This is just some aspects of akathisia and not everyone gets all the symptoms (including some ppl dont get the outer movement). There are no words that even come close to truly explaining this horrific condition... and what its like to try and survive.
The bravest and strongest people I know are those that have endured severe akathisia for any amount of time but even more so the ones that survive with this barbaric condition at constant severe levels for years.
