When I point out that Trump consistently uses the language of genocide, it isn’t that I’m surprised about it. It is that it needs to be consistently pointed out, and not normalised. It should shock our conscience and keep on shocking our conscience. That doesn’t mean we’re surprised. It means we’re not desensitised to it. Historically, people in power who call groups of people ‘garbage’ or ‘vermin’ or other dehumanising pejoratives, usually do this just before they commit atrocities.
