Drawing Bitcoin Some blocks have thousands of transactions, early blocks have hundreds… This snapshot of block 210 000 captures clusters of transactions around 1 BTC Block - 210 000 Timestamp – 2012.11.28 15:28:38 UTC Transactions – 457 Coinbase – 25 BTC + 13.563 Difficulty – 3438908.9601591383 Weight – 796.51 kWU Size – 199.13 kb Hash –000000000000048b95347e83192f69cf0366076336c639f9b7228e9ba171342e #bitcoin
Drawing Bitcoin One of the first challenges of this project was to understand and establish a scale for drawing blocks. I wanted to represent them at a scale and detail with high resolution that allowed them to be unique and comparable. I wanted to express each transaction within a block and log scale emerged as one of the only ways to draw data with such wide ranges without too much abstraction. Re-sized 1 btc to 150mm this works nicely for now for the first 1,000,000 blocks at a 700 x 700 canvas size First drawing captures the first 4 halving blocks as a comparative study; 210000 - 2012.11.28 420000 - 2016.07.09 630000 - 2020.05.11 840000 – 2024.02.20 The drawing shows an expected pull of transactions towards the centre as the mining reward decreases and the btc price surges. Second drawing shows the mining reward as a layer on top showing the relationship between transaction ranges and reward.
Over the last couple of months, I've been developing a project that has reached a level of clarity where I can excitedly start to share… I've been mapping bitcoin blocks, applying similar methodologies I would use when drafting architectural plans or landscapes. The project establishes a consistent visual language and scale that preserves data integrity, detail and resolution that allows block-to-block comparisons without excessive abstraction. The aim of the work is to create and develop a bitcoin block cartography that explores ways to represent and understand bitcoin, blocks and its history. I’ll start posting more about the project over the next couple of weeks and the various blocks that I’ve begun to map and compare. Finally, I’d like to give a shout out to all the bitcoin creatives & artists that I’ve followed over the years who continue to create amazing work and who have inspired me to pursue this project. @M A D E X @npub17hmx...rrvv @npub1lceh...pa0l @npub1r0pw...6zy4 @npub1auvt...lf4r @npub10nnd...2zeh @FractalEncrypt @npub1yp7w...zys7 @npub1qrdg...wmc5 @Scarce.City @satoshigallery @timechaingallery
