Developers are navigating confusing gaps between expectation and reality. So are the rest of us.

) showed that while experienced developers believed AI made them 20% faster, objective tests showed they were actually 19% slower. For Mike Judge, principal developer at the software consultancy Substantial, the METR study struck a nerve.
