@Jornal de Brasília image The Brazilian economy grew 0.4% in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the first quarter and recorded an annual expansion of 2.2%, according to official data released on Tuesday (2). The result marks a slowdown in the largest economy in Latin America, following a growth of 1.3% in the first three months of the year - this figure was revised downward from an initial announcement of +1.4%. Despite this, the 0.4% increase slightly exceeded market expectations, which were around 0.3%, according to estimates from financial institutions consulted by the economic newspaper Valor. Compared to the second quarter of 2024, Brazil's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) advanced 2.2%, according to IBGE data. The quarterly slowdown is mainly due to the performance of the agricultural sector, which went from a growth of 12.2% in the first quarter to a contraction of 0.1% in the second. The better performance in the previous quarter was due to the recovery of grain harvesting, which tends to have a positive impact on GDP in the first months of the year. Additionally, in 2024, Brazil suffered a historic drought. In the second quarter of 2025, the services sector grew 0.6% and industry 0.5%, with a boost of 5.4% in extractive activities. Household consumption increased 0.5%, held back by high interest rates maintained by the Central Bank to control inflation.

According to the denunciation, Francisca Karollainy Barbosa Cavalcante, a social worker, claims that David Luiz wrote a message threatening her family. The Ceará Justice Court confirmed to AFP that the woman filed a complaint against David Luiz, with whom she allegedly had a relationship when he played for Fortaleza at the beginning of the year. @Jornal de Brasília image The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, considered it imperative to punish what he called a failed attempt to break with democratic order. 'The acts that make up the appalling and dark panorama of the indictment are criminal attacks of great importance against democratic institutions. They cannot be treated as minor acts, as utopian fantasies, as reckless adventures, nor as trifles to be reduced to a harmless curiosity of national life,' he said. Today, the Attorney General presented an indictment against former President Bolsonaro and seven former associates for attempted coup and four other crimes. In presenting his arguments to the ministers of the First Chamber of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Gonet cited that while constitutional control can be sufficient to remedy legal deviations, 'no judicial provision is of value against the usurpation of power by brute force.' 'If the coup attempt prevails through the threat of armed power or its actual use, there is nothing that the overthrown order can juridically counter. The defense of democratic order, however, finds space in democratic law to reaffirm, strengthen, and dignify when the attack initiated against it does not consume.' According to Gonet, what is being tried are acts 'that must be considered serious if we want to maintain the living of a democratic state of law.' 'It operates as a deterrent against coup-like adventures and exposes the tenacity and determination of citizenship for the continuity of public life inspired by the protagonism of fundamental rights and the constancy of essential political choices,' he said. The defendants in the so-called crucial nucleus of the coup plot, composed of the main intellectual authors of the coup, are: Jair Bolsonaro - former President of the Republic; Alexandre Ramagem - former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin); Almir Garnier - former commander of the Navy; Anderson Torres - former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Security of the Federal District; Augusto Heleno - former Minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI); Paulo Sérgio Nogueira - former Minister of Defense; Walter Braga Netto - former Minister of Bolsonaro and candidate for vice president in 2022; Mauro Cid - former aide to Bolsonaro. All were accused by the Attorney General's Office (PGR) of the following crimes: leading or integrating an armed criminal organization, violently attacking the Democratic State, coup d'état, qualified damage by violence and grave threat, and deterioration of a listed heritage. The exception is the case of former Abin director Alexandre Ramagem, who, as a federal deputy, was benefited with the suspension of part of the charges and only responds to the first three crimes mentioned above. The rule is provided for in the Constitution. In the event of conviction, the sentences can exceed 40 years in prison, depending on the role played by the convicted person in the coup plot. https://jornaldebrasilia.com.br/noticias/politica-e-poder/panorama-espantoso-e-tenebroso-diz-gonet-sobre-plano-para-golpe/
@Jornal de Brasília image The Bolsonarist opposition took Eduardo Tagliaferro, a former advisor to the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE), to the Senate for a hearing at the same time as the first session of Jair Bolsonaro's trial (PL). Tagliaferro worked with Alexandre de Moraes and has documents and preserved messages from the time he was an assistant to Moraes in the Special Office for Countering Disinformation at the TSE during the 2022 electoral period. Tagliaferro participates in a hearing via video call at the Senate's Security Committee, chaired by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ). The former advisor accuses Moraes of persecuting right-wing politicians and restricting freedom of expression by removing publications and social media profiles. Tagliaferro moved to Italy after being targeted by a Federal Police investigation and was later indicted in April for allegedly violating confidentiality involving information about procedures adopted in Moraes' office. The investigation was opened in secret after Folha de S.Paulo revealed in August last year that Moraes' office at the Supreme Court ordered, unofficially and through messages, the production of reports by the TSE to support decisions made by the minister against Bolsonarists in the fake news inquiry in 2022. At the time, Moraes' office said in a statement that all procedures reported in the report were 'official, regular, and properly documented in the ongoing inquiries and investigations at the STF, with full participation of the Attorney General's Office.' Since moving to Italy, Tagliaferro has used social media to oppose Moraes and the Lula government (PT). Recently, he has joined forces with blogger Allan dos Santos, who has been on the run from Brazilian justice since 2021, when Moraes issued a preventive arrest warrant in the fake news inquiry. https://jornaldebrasilia.com.br/noticias/politica-e-poder/oposicao-leva-ex-assessor-de-moraes-ao-senado-para-audiencia-durante-julgamento/
