📢 Statement on the Tragic Death of Professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro
We are deeply saddened to announce the fatal shooting death of Dr. Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a renowned physicist and director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Centre at MIT. Dr. Loureiro, aged 47, was found shot at his Brookline home on December 15, 2025, and succumbed to his injuries. Local authorities are investigating the incident as a homicide, but no suspects or motives have been identified.
Dr. Loureiro was a globally respected figure in plasma physics and fusion energy research, holding joint professorships at MIT’s Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Department of Physics. Since joining MIT in 2016, he was known for his leadership, scientific contributions, and commitment to mentoring. In 2025, he received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, one of the US’s highest honours for young researchers.
Under his leadership, the Plasma Science and Fusion Centre at MIT advanced the fundamental science of plasma behaviour and fusion energy, contributing to the long-term goal of clean, abundant energy. His colleagues and students remember him for his scientific brilliance, compassion, leadership, and inspiring mentorship.
