The famous painter Salvador Dalรญ didn't pay for the food he and his group ate when they visited restaurants. But it wasn't because he didn't want to; he used a strategy. After finishing his meal, he would take out his checkbook, write down the amount, add the tips, sign it, and that was it.
However, in the white background area behind, Salvador Dalรญ was drawing.
The restaurant owners had the check; they could have cashed Salvador Dalรญ's check and collected the money. But they didn't, because the check had a drawing by Salvador Dalรญ on it. And they kept it... So the restaurant never cashed the check, and Salvador Dalรญ never paid any money. Picasso also used this strategy later on.
